Room 6 - Mrs Vrena Joyce / Mrs Anne Bell

Welcome to Room 6, Term 2, 2017

We hope you all had a nice Easter and fun school holidays. We will continue to build on knowing and understanding your child as an individual and their learning needs alongside creating a supportive learning environment for everyone to learn and build on their current skills.

Our focuses will be:

Reading

Children will be reading daily in guided groups and independently.  We will be focussing on their comprehension of the story to make sure that they are understanding what they are reading. From  Monday to Thursday students will bring a reader home in their book bags to read to an adult. Shared Book and Poem reading will be a whole class activity with various follow up tasks in class.

Writing

This term the children will be developing their writing skills through recounts, descriptions and persuasive writing linked to our Inquiry.  We will continue to add high interest words and ensuring what we write makes sense and is able to be read by others

Maths

Children are individually grouped for the “Number” Strand to match their learning needs.  They will be working with numbers up to 20, grouping, skip counting, recalling number facts and beginning fractions.  Geometry and Measurement Strand (Shape) will be taught as a whole group on Fridays.

Phonics

We will be looking at short and long vowels and recording their sounds.  Children will continue to robot out individual sounds as movement helps to make connections when we are learning.  We will continue to use our new phonic patterns in fun dictated sentences to reinforce this learning and help commit the patterns to their long term memory.  Phonics helps with when reading words and spelling words in our writing.

Handwriting

We will continue to reinforce the correct pencil grip, formation and size.  Please remind your child if you see them not using the correct pencil grip at home.

Inquiry

For our Inquiry focus is entitled “The Sea”.  Children will be looking at living things in the sea and their needs and what we can do to sustain sea life.

Physical Education

This term children will be involved in learning soccer, netball, hockey, mini ball and folk dancing skills.

ICT

We will be focussing on learning how to use the word programme, Publisher alongside reinforcing last terms focusses of paint, kidspiration and Reading Eggs.

Citizenship

Excellence is our school wide focus for the first 5 weeks of this term and then Honesty will be the focus on the second half of the term.
